Phil Edwards, arguably one of the best surfers ever (and the first to surf Pipeline), doesn’t like signing stuff. He has made that clear to all that know him. But when I saw him walking along the beach in front of my office, and looked up at the board he had shaped many years ago hanging on my wall, opportunity called and I couldn’t resist. Quick—grab the board off the wall, throw it in the back of my car, and head Phil off at the pass.
I introduced myself and showed him the board. He just looked directly at me and said, “I don’t like signing stuff.”
But after he checked out the board and realized it had never been ridden, he reluctantly agreed and I got my signature.
